This is
the official geocoin of the 2007 Geocaching Rally held by the Great Basin
and Eastern Sierra Geocachers on June 15-16. GBES Member “Ranger John”
Keesee created the “Petro-Dude” using images of actual petroglyphs from the
Fremont Indians and other ancient tribes of the Western United States.
“Ranger John” came up with a unique twist--he superimposed the image of one
of those ancients on a map of Nevada and placed a GPS receiver in its hand.
The signal from that receiver is depicted heading into space seeking a
satellite. The Petro-Dude, or “The Dude” for short, has become the signature
icon for GBES and is used on all group materials, gear and awards. The back
of the coin shows the silhouette of a miner and his pack mule with two old
cemetery monuments superimposed over a view of Mt Davidson, perched high
above historic Virginia City. The coin finish is brushed silver with an
epoxy coating. Coins are trackable and the Petro-Dude icon will show in the
inventory on your Geocaching.com page. There is a limit of 20 coins per person, while supplies last.
